Shawn began volunteering with the North Augusta Rescue Squad in the early 1970s at the age of 12, joining as a cadet member. He remained a dedicated member of the squad and served as its director from 1981-2015. This early exposure to emergency services sparked what would reveal his lifelong calling.

He went on to build a long and distinguished career as a Nationally certified paramedic. First serving the community of Aiken County with Aiken County EMS for 32 years. He later continued his service in both Georgia and across several South Carolina agencies, including McCormick County, Williston, and Edgefield County. Shawn's commitment, skill, and compassion touched countless lives, while building a large brotherhood of EMS family, something he deeply valued.

Shawn was an instructor and a member of numerous specialty groups within EMS. Among the roles he was most proud to hold were those with the HazMat team, the COBRA team, and various peer support groups. He was a certified flight medic and an advanced P.A.D.I. open water diver, as well as a highly skilled extrication operator, proficient with the "Jaws of Life" and other rescue tools.

As dedicated to his community as Shawn was, he was equally devoted to his family, providing a loving, guiding presence throughout their lives. Shawn was a proud husband, father & grandfather - his passion was camping and treasured the many trips he shared with friends and family. Those times outdoors—full of laughter, stories, and simple joy—were among his happiest moments.

Shawn’s level of dedication to both work and family often meant working multiple shifts to ensure coverage, or driving through the night to make it to his children’s events. His commitment was extraordinary—he worked an incredible 26 years without taking a sick day. He also surprised his wife by celebrating their 10,000-day anniversary, a milestone that perfectly reflected his deep love and devotion.

Shawn proudly earned the SC Ultimate Outsider achievement with his wife by visiting all 47 South Carolina state parks together—a goal that brought them great adventures and memories.

His granddaughter was one of his greatest joys, and the two shared a special bond filled with fun, laughter, and plenty of mischief.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children, Savanna Stephens, Aaron Stephens, and Ryan Stephens; his granddaughter, Arlo June Stephens; his siblings, Anita Fields (Robert), and Robbin Stephens; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Shawn was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Doris Stephens; and his father-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Hall.

Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
