Ruby Wash Obituary

Columbia, SC – Ruby T. Wash, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went home to her Savior on April 25, 2020 at the age of 79.  Ruby was born on July 26, 1940 in Augusta, GA to Dwight Moody and Ruby Griffin Thomas.  She graduated from North Augusta High School in 1958 and attended John Hopkins University before marrying Ansel Joseph Wash on March 12,1960. Together, they raised two children, Randy and Angela.

She retired as a substitute teacher from Lexington & Richland County School District Five.  Many of her favorite memories were from her time and opportunities with the students.  She remembered fondly how some students would call her Sarge, as if she were a military leader.  She especially enjoyed when some of the former students would recognize and speak to her with fond memories.

Ruby enjoyed baking coconut cakes and brownies for friends and family, reading, and completing cross stitch crafts.  One year, as gifts, she made stockings that displayed her talent of cross stitch with various Hummel and Precious Moments patterns.  Ruby also enjoyed playing bridge, watching movies, and spending time with her family and friends. Most especially, Ruby loved being a grandmother to Jordan and Joseph. She spent countless hours cooking, playing, watching movies and sports, and taking them on trips for an adventure.

She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church where she attended faithfully, when possible.  She loved the ministry and opportunity to worship our Lord and congregate with the other members.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Ansel Joseph Wash; her parents, Dwight Moody and Ruby Griffin Thomas; and her brother, Larry Thomas.

She is survived by two children, Angela Wash Quarles of Columbia, Charles R. Wash of Leesville, two grandchildren, Jordan Quarles (Sydney); Joseph Quarles; two great-grandchildren, Jax and Brooks; and her sister, Belva Thomas Lacey.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, a private graveside service will be held at Pineview Memorial Gardens on April 28, 2020, at 11:00 AM.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Pruitt Health Hospice, particularly to Tina Moak, whose compassion and care went above and beyond the call of duty.

Memorials may be made to White Rock Baptist Church, 1409 Peace Haven Road, Chapin, SC 29036 or Pruitt Health Hospice, 903 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29201.
