Robert Francis Powers, Sr, 72, passed away on Friday evening, October 25th, after a long illness.
He was born to the late Thomas V. Powers Sr and Blanche D. (Marcotte) Powers in Central Falls, Rhode Island on January 6, 1952. He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Usry) Powers of North Augusta, South Carolina, his son Robert F. Powers Jr. and wife Libbie of Aiken, South Carolina, and his sister Frances A. Sayer of Richmond, Rhode Island. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Pamela (Salisbury) Powers of Aiken, SC, sister Patricia B. Chevrette of Southington, CT, and brother Thomas V. Powers Jr. of The Villages, FL.
Bob traveled the world for work and pleasure. He enjoyed experiencing life in other cultures and was bilingual, speaking French as well as English, and was studying Spanish when he retired. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He was stationed in Idaho for most of his service, where he camped, hunted and fished in the Rocky Mountains. He later used his GI benefits to attend Bryant College in Smithfield, RI where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He moved his family to Aiken, South Carolina in 1983 to work for Owens Corning Fiberglas. Bobby, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, loved the outdoors. He and wife Joan spent as much time as possible in a cabin in Franklin, NC overlooking the Appalachian Trail. Nothing brought him more joy than sitting on the back deck with their great-granddaughter Chloe, to watch the deer feed in the meadow.
His Memorial Mass, with Military Honors, will be celebrated at The Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Noon with Father Vincent Vodjogbe, celebrant. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following the Mass.
