Retired Sergeant Thomas Freeland, Jr. Obituary

North Augusta, SC....... Thomas J. Freeland, Sergeant, U.S. Army (Retired) age 71, of North Augusta, South Carolina died at Eisenhower Army Medical Center on 19 December 2024. Tom served as a personnel service specialist in the U.S. Army for 20 years, with tours in Germany, Georgia, Arkansas and New York. His awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, and three Army Reserve Components Achievement Medals.  He moved to North Augusta in 1993, and when he retired from active duty, worked for the South Carolina Employment Security Division in Aiken and at the ID Card Section at Darling Hall on Fort Gordon, before fully retiring in 2009.

Tom was born on 20 May 1953 to Mr. Thomas Jackson Freeland, Sr., (Jack) and Vera Sykes Freeland of Mebane, North Carolina. Tom was a devoted husband and proud father and grandfather. He was a talented athlete, pitching on a semi-fast baseball team in Mebane before joining the Army. He was a life-long sports fanatic, with a love for everything from golf to football; loved taking trips to the beach and to see his son and grandson (while trying to beat his best travel time); and was always in search of a good sale. He would bet with you on whether the sun would come up tomorrow and then go double or nothing on the day after.  He went back to school at the age of 50 and earned an Associate degree in Marketing and Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

Tom is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary; son Randy, of McSherrystown, Pennsylvania; daughter, Amy (Kevin Quarles), currently of Columbus, Georgia; grandson, Patrick Freeland; sisters Judy (Mervin) Farrar and Kathryn Tucker; and nephews Bryan (Ellen), Steven (Amanda), Seth (Ashley), Eric (Jessica), Ben (Brady) and Cory and nieces, Kimberly (Nate), Shelly (Chuck) and Kris (Jeff) and their children.

The family will host a celebration of Tom's life from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Rowland-Ford Funeral Home in North Augusta, South Carolina, on 12 January 2025. The event will begin with a short program, which will be live-streamed, followed by an open reception. Please feel free to come dressed to celebrate Tom's life and be prepared to share your favorite Tom story. A military funeral will be held on 13 January 2025 at the National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations to his favorite charities (Good Old Tails Senior Animal Rescue; St. Jude's; Tunnel to Towers) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
