Mrs. Knapp loved her children, adored her grandchildren, and was over the moon for her great grandchildren. She was born an only child and married into a family of 11 children. Her family continued to grow beyond her 5 children as she collected many more “kids” through the years and became known as “Mom” to many more. Her love for children was evident in the creation and operation of The Sandbox Play School which she ran for many years. Following the loss of her husband at 52, she maintained constant contact with her extended family, ensuring that birthday cards were sent to everyone on their special day. Traveling was one of her favorite activities, mostly to the various cities where her grandchildren lived, each weekend of her day planner was filled with a trip to one of their cities. Edisto, Hilton Head, and Cherokee were popular destinations as well. She was a talented seamstress and cook, enjoyed playing cards and games, and was a voracious reader. Fiercely independent, she moved back to North Augusta at 80 after having spent 14 years with her daughter, Diana.
She was a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Church where she was a lifetime member and helped to found the Women’s Guild. In addition to her work at the church, Mrs. Knapp served on the advisory committee for Area 2 Schools and was involved in the planning and construction of North Augusta Elementary School.
She is survived by her children, David Knapp (Kim) of Atlanta, Joni Dyer (Doug) of North Augusta, Julie Swygert (Fain) of Plum Branch, Dan Knapp (Amy) of Greer, and Diana Knapp Wood (Randy) of North Augusta; her grandchildren, Jack, Leslie, Shadrick, Nicole, Jacob, Michael, Bailey, Emmalee, and Thomas; her great grandchildren, Kyron, Haddie, and Milo.
