Marion R. Mundy, Jr.

Marion R. Mundy, Jr. passed away Monday, May 6, 2024, at the age of 79 after a brief illness. A native of Abbeville, South Carolina, he had made his home in North Augusta for about 45 years. He was the son of the late Raymond and Kathleen Mundy of Abbeville. Marion had a sister, Donna Minor, of Anderson and two brothers, Terry (deceased) and John (deceased).

Marion was a graduate of Abbeville High School, North Greenville Junior College (AS Degree), Lander College (BS Degree), and attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. While still in high school, he began working in the textile mill as a floor sweeper, and he continued working in the textiles, moving up through the industry to the position of dye chemist. He worked with three different companies, being transferred from South Carolina to North Carolina and to Mississippi, then back to South Carolina, where he decided to accept God’s call into ministry. He pastored churches in McKenney, Virginia, Vaucluse, South Carolina, and North Augusta, South Carolina, over the next twelve years. Upon leaving the ministry, he worked briefly in sales at Carpet Country and A & A Vending.

Marion married Ann Graves (deceased) in 1965 and from that union were born three children: Marion R. Mundy III – Trey (Christine) of Clermont, Florida; Guyton Harrison Mundy (Natalie) of Palm Coast, Florida; and Jeanie Mundy Glover (Todd) of North Augusta. In 1989 he married Wanda Hibbard and added four bonus children to the family: Steve Hibbard (Mary) of Tiburon, California; Phillip Hibbard of Augusta, Georgia; Susan King (Mark) of North Augusta; and Hugh Hibbard (Kim) of North Augusta. Fifteen grandchildren – Joshua King, Hannah King Martin, Lydia King, Patrick King, Joel King, William Hibbard, John Hibbard, Douglas Hibbard, Richie Price, Chance Price, Jordyn Price, Shelby MacKellar, Liam O’Brien, Reagan Glover, and Morgan Glover, as well as two great-grandchildren – Haidyn King and Rhett King – complete the family. Marion loved his family, and he was very proud of his children and grandchildren, taking every opportunity to brag about their accomplishments, no matter how big or small.

Marion loved God and loved his church. After retiring from the ministry, he served as a teacher, deacon, and on various committees. He loved to sing bass and to be asked to sing in his church’s quartet. He was most dedicated to his ten years of work as co-director of the Young at Heart ministry at his church, where he worked to help make every monthly meeting a special occasion.

Marion loved to travel and after retiring, he and Wanda visited all fifty states and about a dozen foreign nations. They took many road trips and cruises, but their preferred way to travel was through Ionosphere Tours by bus. Marion loved to fish and took advantage of every opportunity, especially gigging for flounder off the Florida coast with his son Guyton. He was a devoted Braves fan and a Clemson Tigers football fan, but the sport he loved the most was golf. He loved playing a weekly game at Midland Valley golf course with friends, and although he rarely scored less than 100, he was always hopeful. Even after his health limited his ability to put his ball on the tee, he was ready to play with help from his friends.

A celebration of life service for Marion will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Rowland-Ford Funeral Home in North Augusta, Rev. Chris Wyatt officiating. The family will receive visitors at 2:00 p.m. before the service.
