Joyce Kitchens Woods

Aiken, SC……. Joyce Kitchens Woods entered into rest on July 3, 2024 at the age of 89.

She was born in Augusta, GA on March 15, 1935 to the late Herbert Allen and Agnes Usry Kitchens, of Gibson, GA. She was the widow of the late Arnold J. Woods.

Joyce graduated from Glascock County High School in 1953. She then moved to Augusta where she graduated from Bolens Business School. She later earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Augusta College.

Joyce was an Administrative Assistant at University Hospital for 41 years, from 1954 until her retirement in 1995. Even after her retirement, she continued to serve the hospital by joining the Volunteer Board. She was also a member of the National Secretaries Association. She was a former local, state and national president of the organization, achieving their CPS designation.

For as hard as Joyce worked, she also knew how to enjoy life. She loved spending time with family and friends, entertaining, traveling and shopping. She made friends with everyone and enjoyed lifetime friendships with the people she met after moving to Augusta. Her friends were from the University Hospital community, Fairview Presbyterian Church, the business community in Augusta and the Hammond Hills community, just to name a few. She lived in the North Augusta’s Hammond Hills community from 1962 until 2021. One of Joyce’s favorite pastimes was University of Georgia football. Joyce and her friend Rogie Wilkes were season ticket holders to the University of Georgia home games. They watched away games on television, and always traveled to the Georgia/Florida game. Joyce never realized that Georgia defeated Alabama for the National Championship. She would have loved it.

She is survived by her sister Sheryl (Jim) Snider of Sevierville, TN; stepsons Jack Woods of Statesboro, GA and Lee ( Rebecca) Woods of Wrens, GA; step-grandson Mitch ( Anna) Woods of Louisville, GA; and the extended Kitchens and Usry families. The family would like to extend their thanks to Gentiva Hospice, Aiken Memory Care and the home caregivers for their care, compassion and love for Joyce.

The family will receive friends at Rowland-Ford Funeral Home on July 9th, 2024 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Magnolia Baptist Church, on July 10th, 2024 at 10:00 AM, in Gibson, GA. Pastor Andrew Duckworth will be officiating. Interment in the church cemetery will follow the service. Honorary pallbearers will be the Piedmont (formerly University) Hospital Volunteer Board.
