Frances Fisher Merwin

North Augusta, SC…...Frances F. Merwin, 94, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at NHC-National Healthcare North Augusta. 

Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2019 in the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia with Rev. David H. Lauten officiating. The family will receive friends in the church atrium following the memorial service.

Gardening, knitting and birding were among her many hobbies. She loved gardening and farm life so much that she ensured that her children were reared on a farm where she grew some of their produce and perfected the farm to table menu before it was a mainstream idea. Ms. Merwin earned her Master’s Degree in education and had a teaching career in elementary education that spanned two decades. Upon her retirement from the Port Washington School District in New York, she moved to Columbia, SC where she would reside for the next 35 years. She was a long time, active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia and had a strong faith and desire to be a light to others. Her desire to help others led her to being active in prison ministry where she volunteered and led Bible study. On more than one occasion, Ms. Merwin opened her home as a place of transition for those who were coming out of the prison system, helping them reacclimate to life outside of an institution.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Andrew Scott Merwin of MT, Douglas Clarke Merwin (Katie) of AZ, Michael Gaius Merwin (Jeanette) of GA, Russell Talcott Merwin (Kristine) of MO and Linda Randolph Merwin of MA; her grandchildren, Joshua, Benjamin, Kina, Christopher, Stephen, Anna, Jennifer, Gretchen, Pamela, Caitlin, Johanna, Laura, Nathan, Reid; and 30 ½ great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Sandra; her brother, Andrew Fisher and her sister, Julie Firman.
