Eugene “Gene” Scott Sawyer of North Augusta, SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. Remembered for his faithful service, generous giving, and cheerful hospitality, he demonstrated the love of Christ to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life verse was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
He is survived by his children: Scott Stuart Sawyer (Jody) and Jane Sawyer Marcoux (Steven); nine grandchildren (to whom he was affectionately known as “Poppop”): Adelaide Marcoux Maggard (Daniel), Camilla Marcoux Fleming (Adam), Brook Sawyer Barnett (Dustin), Gilbert Marcoux, Joshua Sawyer, Oliver Marcoux, Bremen Sawyer, Shield Sawyer, and Bethany Sawyer; and two great grandchildren: Jack Barnett and Cordelia Fleming.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Anne Curtis Blount Sawyer, his parents Mellie and Janie Sawyer and his brother William “Don” Sawyer. Maternal grandparents were Willie and Belle Wilson and paternal grandparents were Elisha and Lillie Sawyer.
Gene was born in Clearwater, SC on February 5, 1936. He graduated from Langley-Bath-Clearwater High School in 1954. He attended the Junior College of Augusta and the University of South Carolina, where he received a B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1959. He owned and operated Bath Pharmacy and Sawyer’s Home Health Care until 1994 and later established an in-house pharmacy at the Margaret J. Weston Medical Center in Clearwater, SC and retired from there in 2011.
Gene was a life member of the SC Pharmaceutical Association. He was a charter member of the Aiken Area Council on Aging where he served as treasurer. He also served on the board of the Aiken County United Fund and the Augusta Rescue Mission. He was a charter member, vice-president, and treasurer of the L.B.C. Jaycees, receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1967, and he was a long time member of the Augusta Optimist Club.
Gene was appointed to the Aiken County Commission on Higher Education of USC-Aiken in 1961 where he served as a charter member and treasurer. For his fifty years of service with USC-Aiken and the surrounding community he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of South Carolina in 2011. He was a founding elder and faithful member of North Augusta Bible Chapel for over forty years.
His funeral service will be held at Rowland-Ford Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00pm on Sunday, December 13, 2020. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens on the Aiken/Augusta Highway.
