Elizabeth Hixon Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter Hixon, 94, died August 7, 2018 at University Hospital surrounded by her family.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 11, 2018 in the First Baptist Church of North Augusta with Dr. Stephen Cutchins, Dr. Randy Cooper and Rev. Roy Kiser officiating. Interment will be in Pineview Memorial Gardens.

She was born in her grandmother’s home in Graniteville, SC on October 13, 1923 to Sammie and Mary Dobey Carpenter, affectionately known as “Other Mama.” The family moved to North Augusta, SC, when Mrs. Hixon was two weeks old, and she never left. She was preceded in death by her husband John L. Hixon, who was a Captain in the US Army when they married in 1945. In 1952, the young couple founded Hixon Insurance in North Augusta where Mrs. Hixon served as secretary and treasurer for 66 years. Her huge smile and warm welcome were a mainstay at the family business where she continued to work daily until the age of 92. She was much loved by the North Augusta community and will be remembered for her vivacious personality, zest for life, and abundance of energy. Mrs. Hixon was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta for 78 years and a member of the Faithful Sunday School Class. Over the years, she was honored many times including North Augusta’s Citizen of the Year in 1974, an honor she shared with her husband John L. In 2008, she received First Baptist Church of North Augusta Sheffield Club’s Senior Adult Woman of the Year award. She was selected as the Grand Marshal of the North Augusta Lion’s Club Christmas Parade in 2009 and led the charges in a red convertible with a sign that read, “Elizabeth Hixon … Everyone’s Favorite.” She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, the Sheffield Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Acacia Lodge, and the North Augusta Lions Club, where she organized the horse show for many years.

Mrs. Hixon is survived by her sons Douglas Robert Hixon and William Milton Hixon (Elaine), both of North Augusta; and her grandchildren, Jonathan Douglas Hixon, Brian Louis Hixon, William Weston V and Elizabeth Echols Weston.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, Aug. 10, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of North Augusta.

Pallbearers will be Craig Baynam, Bernard Kitchens, David Mathis, Michael Mathis, Yancy Skinner, Robbie Bell, and Rod Greenway.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Strom Fellowship and the Faithful Sunday School Class.
