Jacqueline Dixon Obituary

Jacqueline Brown Dixon was a musician, artist, gardener, teacher, wife, mother, grandmother, and lover of all things beautiful.  She loved to talk, loved to listen, and loved to enter into other people’s stories—with kindness and empathy.  She genuinely liked (most) people—she never met a stranger—and she hardly ever said anything mean about anybody, not even in the privacy of her own home.

Jackie was born on February 9, 1938 in Troutman, North Carolina, the only child of Johnnie and Jo Brown.  She treasured her large Brown family and especially adored her aunts and uncles.

After earning an associate degree from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, Jackie completed her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Organ at Furman University.  She began her teaching career immediately after graduation, first in New Ellenton, and eventually landing at Paul Knox Middle School in North Augusta, 31 years in total.  She was nominated for South Carolina Teacher of the Year in 1979.

She met her husband, Bob Dixon, in 1967 at First Baptist Church in North Augusta.  He was smitten by her immediately; she took some convincing.  The two married in 1968 and moved into a small house on a hill on a quiet street in North Augusta, where they lived together until Jackie’s death on March 22, 2024.

Jackie and Bob turned that small house into a place of astonishing beauty—bursting on the outside with flowers and greenery of all types—ever changing—and filled with selfless love on the inside.

They welcomed their only child, Emily, into that home in 1981, naming her after one of Jackie’s beloved students.  Jackie and Emily had one adventure after another, and they both loved every minute spent together.  Never has a mother loved a daughter more deeply and more selflessly.

That’s who Jackie was—a selfless, kind, loving person.  Even while suffering great physical pain—for decades—Jackie poured herself out for others.  She was incredibly strong-willed and even stubborn, and when she decided she was going to do a thing, she did it, defying the pain in her body if necessary.

Jackie’s life was music.  Sometimes the notes were sad and slow, especially at the end.  But for most of her 86 years, her life sang like the church organs she played for Jesus—rich, textured, joyful, and reaching to the heavens.

Left with immense gratitude for Jackie’s life are her husband of 55 years, Robert “Bob” Dixon; their daughter Emily (Dixon) Zimmer; their son (in-law) John Zimmer; and their grandson Luke Zimmer. Jackie is also survived by her sister-in-law Ivelyn Dixon and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
